40th anniversary of Vanier's death
It was wonderful to read Father de Souza's great column about Georges Vanier in the National Post, to have highlighted that this past week was the 40th anniversary of his death. As a young adult, I am inspired by his loyal service and prayerful faith.
Truly Vanier is a great Canadian that we need to remember, not only for the lessons of life fully lived, but to rediscover who we are as a Dominion, as Canadians. His example demonstrates how in Canada, after centuries of organic growth, a unique identity developed which unfortunately is little appreciated today. This Canadian heritage includes our monarchy, a combination of French and British contributions, and a resolve to build a better country together for all of us.
May his example encourage us to nurture piety, loyalty and service in a new generation. As a young Catholic, I hope to see him and his wife Pauline beatified soon. And as Vanier might say, "may God's will be done" (his personal motto) and may God save the Queen of Canada.
